Coritiba Foot Ball Club is a Brazilian Football team that competes in the National League Série A and the State Championship Campeonato Paranaense. Situated in the capital city of the state Paraná, Coritiba is a team enriched with history and success at both the National and State level. Founded in 1909, it is the oldest club in the state and has won more State Championships than both of their main rivals combined, amassing an incredible 38 titles to date. For the 2022 season Coritiba will be back in Série A following a successful bounce-back into the topflight of Brazilian football with a 3rd place promotion in Série B.
The club was founded with two teams playing together on October 23rd, 1909, in Ponta Grossa. One a German-Brazilian gymnastics club (Clube Ginástico Teuto-Brasileiro Turnverein), the other, a team of employees from the South American Brazilian Engineering Company (Clube de Foot Ball de Tiro Pontagrossense). After the match, the club’s founders and members were excited by the game of football and decided to dedicate their club exclusively to the sport. There were already more than 50 players, many of them not of German descent, yet the Clube Ginástico Teuto-Brasileiro Turnverein did not allow non-German members, leading to the formation of a separate club. Finally, on January 30th, 1910, the independent Coritiba Foot Ball Club was formed through approval of a foundation document.
Coritiba Foot Ball Club play their home matches at the Estádio Couto Pereira, a nearing 40,000 capacity stadium situated in the heart of Curitiba. The stadium was founded as Belfort Duarte in 1932 with the help of then club president, Couto Pereira. With his passing in 1977 the stadium name was changed to honor Mr. Pereira.
Coritiba Foot Ball Club’s 1970’s era brought major success to both the club and its supporters. A period of countless trophies at the State level brought the most out the fans, recording attendance numbers that still hold to this date. This period of success, also known as the Golden Decade, started with the club’s intention to make both major signings and play abroad to countries such as France and Portugal. Eventually the accumulation of key players and exposure to international football paid dividends, leading to six consecutive State Championships, a record for Paraná State football. From this grand-scale success at the State level it took Coritiba Foot Ball Club until 1985 to finally see glory at the National level winning their soul Brasileirão championship in front of 91,000 fans at Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro.
The end of the 2020 Série A season saw Coritiba Foot Ball Club sadly relegated from the top-flight of Brazilian football. A process that has become far too common over the 21st century for a club of this stature. However, under the leadership of Gustavo Morinigo, and key goals from Léo Gamalho and Igor Paixão the club was able to successfully earn back promotion the following year, which brings hope of success for the 2022 season.
