Somerset County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first class county clubs within the ECB. Since the club obtained first class status in 1895 Somerset have won a number of domestic titles, most notably 4 One-Day cups and 1 Twenty20 cup. Although sharing the mantle with Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire to never win the Country Championship the club have come runners-up 6 times, all of which have come since 2001. Notable players to have played for Somerset include club legends Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Caddick and James Hildreth, all of which represented Somerset for the entirety of their careers.
Somerset play their home matches at the Cooper Associates County Ground, nicknamed Ciderabad. The stadium has a maximum capacity of 12,000 and has been home to the club since 1882. The County Ground has hosted a number of internationals with the first being played in 1983, a World Cup group game between England and Sri Lanka. Since 2006 the County Ground has been the headquarters for the England Women’s cricket team.
It wasn’t until the late 1970s that Somerset put together a formidable squad which could challenge for trophies. A trio of all-time greats would be assembled in Sir Ian Botham, Sir Viv Richards and Joel Garner. Under the captaincy of Brian Rose, Somerset won their first ever trophy, winning both the One-Day Cup and National League in 1979. Limited over success carried on in the 80s with Somerset winning back to back Benson & Hedges Cups in 1981-82 and another One-Day Cup in 1983.
In recent years the club has been terrific in all formats of the game winning a record 4th One-Day title in 2019 with an iconic play-offs performance in which the team could do no wrong with the bat. In the same season Somerset finished runners-up again in the County Championship finishing agonizingly close to eventual winners Essex. Currently competing in Division 1 the club would like to improve on their 7th place finish last year and push forwards with key players such as Craig Overton, Jack Leach and club captain Tom Abell.
