Hampshire County Cricket Club
Founded in 1863, Hampshire Cricket is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within England & Wales. Boasting a rich and competitive history, the club has secured multiple major honours, most notably winning the County Championship in 1961 and 1973. Hampshire has also built a strong reputation in limited-overs cricket, becoming one of the most successful counties in white-ball competitions. Notable players to have represented Hampshire include club legends Derek Shackleton, Mark Nicholas and the late Robin Smith. Overseas stars to have featured for the club include Malcolm Marshall, Barry Richards and one of cricket’s greatest, Shane Warne.
Hampshire Cricket hosts their home games at the Utilita Bowl, located in West End, Southampton. Since opening in 2001, the stadium has become one of the premier cricketing venues in England, hosting numerous international fixtures including Test matches, One-Day Internationals, and ICC tournament games such as those during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. The venue is also renowned for its modern facilities and has hosted a variety of major events beyond cricket, including concerts and hospitality showcases.
Hampshire Cricket played its inaugural first-class match in 1864 but experienced fluctuating fortunes in its early history, including periods without official first-class status. The club was formally admitted to the County Championship in 1895 and steadily established itself within the domestic game. Hampshire’s breakthrough came in the 1960s and 1970s, with the club securing its first County Championship title in 1961, followed by a second triumph in 1973.
