Cricket South Africa administers the South Africa Men’s and Women’s national cricket team. Also known as the Proteas, the two teams represent South Africa in International cricket and are regarded as one of the most iconic cricketing nations.

Proteas

The South African men’s cricket team, also known as the Proteas, played their first official Test match in 1889 against England, making them one of the oldest Test-playing nations. Their traditional home ground is Newlands in Cape Town, though matches are also hosted at other major venues such as the Wanderers in Johannesburg. While South Africa has yet to claim an ICC World Cup trophy, the nation has consistently produced world-class players including AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock and the great Barry Richards. But most notably the men’s team can claim to have had the greatest cricketer in the modern game, Jacques Kallis. He amassed Test totals of 13,289 runs, 292 wickets and 200 catches.

For much of the late 2000s and early 2010s, the Proteas were ranked as the number one Test team in the world, earning a reputation for resilience and excellence in the longest format of the game. Notably going unbeaten in a home test series for over a decade from 2006-2015.

Currently ranked 2nd in Test Cricket and 5th in both ODI and T20Is, the Men’s national team recently secured a historic victory over Australia, claiming their first Test Championship. A man of the match performance from opener Aiden Markan secured the win with a fantastic 136 in tough batting conditions at the home of cricket.

Proteas Women

The South African women’s cricket team, also known as the Proteas Women, played their first official international match in 1960 against England, making them one of the earlier women’s teams in world cricket. Their traditional home venues include Newlands in Cape Town and the Wanderers in Johannesburg, which they share with the men’s side.

Current stars include Captain Laura Wolvaardt who is one of the best batters in the game across all formats, Tazmin Brits, a dynamic top-order batter, and Marizanne Kapp, one of the world’s leading all-rounders. Together, they represent the growing strength and competitiveness of South African women’s cricket.

In recent years, the team has improved steadily on the global stage, reaching the semifinals of multiple ICC tournaments and finishing as runners-up in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup, their best result to date. Currently ranked 5th in ODIs, the team aims to go a step further than 2023 and win their first ICC event in the upcoming 2025 Women’s World Cup.
