Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the ECB. Founded in 1878 the club held minor county status until 1905 when the club joined the County Championship and obtained first-class status. Since 1905 the county has gone onto win a number of trophies in the shorter format of the game, in particular the convincing 1992 NatWest victory and the two recent Vitality Blast trophies in 2013 and 2016. Northamptonshire has been very privileged to have a number of great local and overseas talents represent the county but three notable players within that group include Allen Lamb, Sir Curtly Ambrose and Mushtaq Mohammad.
The home of Northamptonshire is the County Ground, a venue on Wantage Road in the Abignton area of Northampton. The County played their first match at the ground in 1886 but played their first first-class match in 1905 in a draw against Leicestershire. The County Ground has a capacity of 6,500 and has hosted a number of international fixtures but is most well known for being a venue that favors spinners.
Although being one of the three counties to never win the County Championship, Northamptonshire has had success in the one-day competitions. From the 80s and 90s the club enjoyed their most competitive period on the back of winning their first trophy in 1976 under the great Pakistani duo of Mushtaq Mohammad and Sarfraz Nawaz. During this era a Northamptonshire led by Allan Lamb managed two trophies and six runner-up finishes. In more recent times the trends have been the same for Northamptonshire with the bulk of their success coming in the T20 format of the game. From 2013 to 2016 the county won 2 Vitality Blast competitions and a runner-up in one, losing by just 13 runs.
Currently competing in Division One of the County Championship, Northamptonshire under the coaching of John Sadler will look to improve on their 6th place finish from last year. Key squad members include club captain Luke Procter who had the 8th most runs in last year’s competition, England international David Willey and leading wicket taker Ben Sanderson.
