S.E. Palmeiras is a Brazilian professional football club founded in 1914 and is widely recognised as one of the most popular clubs, with the most trophies and success in Brazil. Despite the club being primarily an association football team, S.E. Palmeiras competes in a number of different sports, the football team plays in the Campeonato Paulista, the state of São Paulo’s premier state league, as well as in the Brasileirão Série A, the top tier of Brazilian football. The club also known as ‘Palestra’ has a long-standing rivalry with Corinthians, which is known in football as the Derby Paulista. S.E. Palmeiras also holds rivalries with other Campeonato Paulista giants such as Santos and São Paulo. Since the clubs inception S.E. Palmeiras has produced continuous talent with club legends such as Dudu, Djalma Santos and legendary goalkeeper Marcos. In recent years with the rise of European Leagues many notable players who have developed through S.E. Palmeiras have gone onto to shine in Europe such as Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo and Gabriel Jesus.
Estádio Palestra Itália was home of S.E. Palmeiras from 1917 to 2010. It was one of the most important Brazilian grounds, considering the amount of decisive and important matches that it hosted. The club currently plays its home matches at the 44,000 seater stadium Allianz Parque, which opened in November 2014. The stadium was built for multipurpose events with many other facilities in place, including VIP areas, media centers and restaurants & bars. In 2015, S.E. Palmeiras won their first Brasileirão match in Allianz Parque with a 2-1 victory over Fluminense. Traditionally the club was heavily supported by Brazilians of Italian decent but over time, that distinction has reduced and today the club is seen to have one of the most diverse and engaging fan bases in Brazil.
It took key individuals and key media outlets such as the Fanfulla newspaper to help defend the interest of Italians in Brazil and help draft an invitation to those interested in forming a sports club. After several meetings the ‘Palestra Itália’ was born on August 26th, 1914. The club paid homage to their roots and donned blue match kits similar of the Italian national team. By 1916, the team joined the city’s main sports league and held its first official championship match. By 1920 the club captured their first tile, winning the São Paulo State Championship over a determined Paulistano squad in the deciding match.
The 1960s saw the greatest spell of success for the club. The standard of quality led by the one who would come to symbolize this period of football excellence, Ademir Da Guia, led the ‘Palestra’ to be called the “Academy” of Brazilian football. An example of this was in 1965 when the Brazilian Sports Federation used the entire S.E. Palmeiras roster to launch Minerão Stadium and represent Brazil in an official national team match against Uruguay for the Inconfidência Cup – S.E. Palmeiras as Brazil won 3-0 over the Uruguayan blue. By the end of the 1960s the club had amassed the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A four times and the Campeonato Paulista twice. This success has been the foundation to their record standing 10 Brasileiro Série A titles.
