Cadiz C.F. is a professional football club based in Andalusia, Spain. The club famously known as the Yellow Submarine currently competes in La Liga (2020-21), following a runners-up promotion from the Segunda Division. The success from the 2019-20 campaign ended the clubs 14 year wait back to the top of Spanish Football.
Since 1955 the club has played their football at the Estadio Ramón de Carranza. Having been completely rebuilt twice since its opening the stadium now seats 25,000. Other than the clubs home matches the stadium also holds the notable preseason tournament the Ramón de Carranza Trophy, which has hosted a number of prolific teams such as AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Ajax. In 2019 the Stadium also accommodated their first home international fixture with a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match between Spain and Malta.
Founded in 1910 Cadiz C.F. was ultimately interrupted from competing in the Southern Football Federation due to the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. Therefore in the clubs infancy they only managed friendly fixtures against teams such as Real Betis and Celta de Vigo. Following the events of the Spanish Civil War Cádiz C.F. played their first official season in the Segunda Division (1939-40).
Having spent two decades in the second division of Spanish Football the club finally reached La Liga in 1977-78 but success was short lived with the club being relegated the following year. A continued presence in La Liga came in 1985/86 where the club managed to miraculously avoid relegation for 8 seasons giving the nickname The Yellow Submarine. These memorable years were spearheaded by club legend Mágico González who scored a number of timely goals that kept Cadiz C.F. in Lal Liga.
Since the clubs last La Liga presence in 2005/06 Cadiz C.F. has floated in and out of both the Second and Third divisions of Spanish Football. In 2016 head coach Álvaro Cervera arrived to the club having recently been promoted from Segunda Division B. The arrival of the current head coach sparked consistent performances in the Segunda Division with the team repeating their best start over 10 games in the 2019-20 season. This early success was a catalyst to the team’s eventual promotion to La Liga.
Cadiz C.F. head into the 2020-21 La Liga season with a reshuffled board of directors and substantial overseas investment, which aim on keeping the club firmly established in La Liga for years ahead. The president of the Andalusian club Manuel Vizcaíno informed the plans of using new resources to modernize the infrastructure, facilities and other areas of the club which puts Cadiz C.F. in an upward trend for the upcoming season, starting on September 12th, 2020.
